SAFER actions N°038 / 041 - Poland

Floods

From mid-May onwards into June 2010, a succession of torrential downpours have and are still causing (mid-June) extensive flooding. In the May episodes the most affected regions were Silesia (Slaskie), Subcarpathia (Podkarpackie), Opole (Opolskie), Swietokrzyskie and the area of Kraków in southern Poland mainly along the Vistula and Oder Rivers and their tributaries. For example on the 20th of May, 6 deaths were reported with approximately 3 500 persons being evacuated along the Wisla River, in particular in Kraków and Sandomierz. The floods led to the closure of schools, bridges and the Auschwitz-Birkenau site. Numerous road and rail infrastructure were affected, 2 dams, dikes and bridges broke, and power cuts affected several zones, including part of Kraków and surroundings cities. These floods hit other Central European countries: Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Serbia. At present, it is mostly the Vistula River that is pre-ocupying the civil protection authorities of Poland, with a request to map and monitor the flood emergency situation.
