SAFER action N°022 - Republic of Ireland

Floods, Shannon River

Since Friday the 20th of November 2009, heavy rain has caused record floods in Western, Southern and Central parts of the Republic of Ireland, involving close to 1500 evacuations. The whole Shannon watershed is affected, from the counties Leitrim and Roscommon in the north to Clare and Limerick in the south. This river, the longest river in Ireland reached a record level of 39.2m in Athlone, Co. Westmeath, on the 25th of November with water levels remaining close to this level until the 30th of November. This is the most serious flood event ever recorded, since records began 100 years ago. This SAFER action was activated by SERTIT on behalf of the Irish Office of Public Works, on the evening of Monday the 30th of November 2009.
