Hurricane/Floods

Hurricane Klaus
The 24th of January 2009 Hurricane Klaus ploughed west to east through SW France with gusts reaching 198 kmph accompanied by torrential rain. The storm is considered to be the most destructive over France since the 1999 storms. According to estimates, in the most affected forests of the Aquitaine, windfall damage ranges up to 60% of the forest cover; concerning approximately 1,000,000 m3 of wood volumes. Water courses have burst their banks in a number of départements. The electrical distribution network was badly hit blacking out thousands of households and enterprises. Apart from the injured, 12 people lost their lives to the storm. A state of natural disaster was declared for nine départements
