Un tremblement de terre de puissance 7,6 sur l'échelle de Richter a frappé l'Inde et le Pakistan, dans la région du Cachemire, à 03:50:38 UTC (8:50:38 heure locale). L'épicentre était situé à environ 95 kilomètres au nord-est d'Islamabad. Les effets ont été ressentis sur un rayon de 300-400 kilomètres, dans le nord-ouest de l'Inde, le nord du Pakistan et en Afghanistan.
Le 21 octobre, les autorités pakistanaises ont annoncé un bilan de 49.700 morts et 74.000 blessés. Selon l'ONU, un million de personnes seraient sans abri.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck on the India-Pakistan border in the Kashmir region at 03:50:38 UTC (8:50:38 local time). The epicentre was located about 95 kilometres to the northeast of Islamabad. Shocks were felt over a radius of some 300-400 kilometers in northwest India, northern Pakistan and Afghanistan.
On 21st October, Pakistani authorities reported casualties at some 49,700 dead and over 74,000 injured. The UN estimated 1 million people have been left homeless.
