Depuis la fin du mois de mars 2009, les villes et les provinces du nord de l'Afghanistan ont connu de fortes pluies, ayant entraîné à l'heure actuelle la mort d'environ 20 personnes. Plusieurs autres ont été blessées et jusqu'à présent, les dégâts provoqués par la catastrophe dans toute la région ont affecté plus de 54 000 personnes.
Dans la province de Baghlan, les inondations ont provoqué la rupture de 38 barrages conduisant à la destruction de plus de 450 hectares de zones agricoles et à la perte d'une grande quantité du bétail. Dans les provinces de Samangan et de Djozdjan, respectivement 48 et 13 000 hectares de terres agricoles ont également été détruites, tout comme dans les secteurs de Jelga, Borka et Tai Hazara où plusieurs kilomètres de routes ont été détériorés. On dénombre par ailleurs 25 moulins à eau et 8 mosquées endommagés par la catastrophe.
The northern cities and districts of Afghanistan experienced heavy rainfalls since the end of March 2009. Continual rains in the northern regions of the country have caused numerous casualties and damages. Approximately 20 people were killed and six injured. In total, 54 588 people were affected.
In the districts of Baghlan province, 38 water dams and 464 hectares of agricultural land and gardens were destroyed, and a huge number of livestock were killed. In Samangan province, 48 hectares of farmland and in Jawzjan province, 13 000 hectares of land were destroyed. Additionally, 27 km of road in Jelga district, 15 km in Borka and 35 km in Tai Hazara districts have been destroyed. A total of 25 water mills and 8 mosques were also reportedly destroyed.
