Douze personnes ont été tuées dans des glissements de terrain dans deux villages au nord des Philippines, portant à au moins 27 morts le bilan du typhon Parma, qui a de plus causé d'importants dégâts matériels dans le nord du pays. 50 000 personnes avaient été évacuées par les autorités locales vers des abris situés dans des zones plus élevées. Bien qu'il ait été rétrogradé au rang de tempête tropicale, Parma demeure stationnaire au large des côtes philippines et pourrait provoquer d'autres inondations et glissements de terrain dans les jours à venir.
La situation causée par Parma n'est cependant en rien comparable à celle de la tempête tropicale Ketsana qui a frappé le pays une semaine plus tôt, provoquant les pires inondations au pays en 40 ans et faisant près de 300 morts à Manille et dans ses environs. Les autorités estiment à un demi-million le nombre de personnes évacuées des suites de Ketsana. De plus, les dommages faits aux récoltes sont évalués à 145 millions de dollars.
Landslides killed 12 people in two villages in the Northern Philippines, bringing to 27 Parma’s death toll, which also caused much material damage in the north-east of the country. Local authorities have evacuated 50 000 people to higher lying areas. Even if Parma has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm, the system lies stationary off the coast and could cause further flooding and landslides in the coming days.
Parma has not caused in anyway the same damage as Ketsana the week before, which led to the worst flooding in 40 years, 300 fatalities in and around Manila and an estimated 145 million dollars in damages. The authorities estimate that over half a million people were displaced because of Ketsana.
