Le 11 mars 2011 à 5h46 (UTC), un séisme d'une magnitude de 8,9 frappe le Japon, se produisant à une centaine de kilomètres au large de la préfecture de Miyagi au nord-est de Honshu, la principale île de l'archipel. Cette zone est de nouveau touchée une heure plus tard par un tsunami qui dévaste tout sur son passage. Le bilan est très lourd s'élevant à des milliers de mort et des dégâts considérables, sans compter la menace nucléaire due à une explosion dans la centrale nucléaire de Fukushima.
